Dinnertime Choices Could Keep You Awake at Night

Sleep Better: Foods that are keeping you awake at night

Are your dinner time choices keeping you awake at night?

Are your dinnertime choices keeping you awake at night? Making right choices at the dinner table may help you sleep better. What you eat before bedtime could become problematic. We all know how important sleep is to our overall health. Late night snacks or high fatty foods may keep you awake at night and leave you feeling groggy and fatigued the next day.

Steaks and chops are delicious, but they are high in fat, especially when they are laden with gravies and sauces. Ice cream hits the spot, but again, it is so high in fat. What about a glass of wine or a cocktail? Yes, alcohol can be problematic, too. If you happen to suffer with acid reflux at night, stay clear of tomatoes.

These 5 food items eaten at dinner time will rob you of shut eye and could keep you awake at night:

  1. Beef, fatty meats
  2. Ice Cream
  3. Alcoholic beverages
  4. Chocolate
  5. Desserts high in sugar

Sleep Problems Within the Military

Sleep Problems within the Military

Sleep problems within the Military are common

With the recent celebration of our community of military personnel and veterans on Veteran’s Day, I came across an article discussing the impact of sleep problems within the military.

Some of the most common sleep issues, such as insomnia, are quite common among military personnel.  Some of the reasons for an increase in the frequency of sleep problems within the military as compared to people outside the services include stress caused by:

  • being deployed and possibly facing combat.
  • irregular work shift schedules during deployment and in combat.
  • difficulty in adjusting to life at home after completion of active duty.
  • service-related injuries and illnesses.

If you are presently serving in the armed forces or have served in the past, it’s important for you to realize that sleep problems within the military are common in comparison to others outside the military.  Many sleep issues and sleep disorders can be treated successfully.  If you are suffering with any sleep disturbances or have a generalized sense of poor sleep quality, schedule an appointment to talk with a physician. A physician who is knowledgeable in sleep disorders and the treatments of them can give you a thorough evaluation and offer helpful solutions.

Sleep Gifts to improve sleep quality

Give gifts that improve sleep quality

Here are some fantastic gift ideas to help improve sleep quality.  Some of these gift ideas promote a calmer night. Others help you wake up a little easier.

For occasional or frequent snoring:

  1. Pillows designed to promote side sleeping
  2. Breathe Right Nasal Strips
  3. Contoured Sleep Back Wedges
  4. Prescribed professional Oral Appliance Therapy for snoring and apnea

For light sleeping:

  1. Bedside advanced sleep sound devices
  2. The Promise of Sleep by Dement and Vaughan
  3. Portable travel humidifier
  4. TV headphones
  5. Sleep masks

For difficulty waking up:

  1. An alarm clock with a natural light feature

Personally, TV headphones together with a sleep mask have helped me tremendously when trying to sleep through my husband’s occasional late-night television viewing. I can’t imagine being without them.

The contour wedge pillow can be adjusted for great back support while reading in bed.  Others readjust the configuration to sleep in an angle that promotes less snoring or better breathing.

‘Mask-less’ Alternatives for Sleep Apnea

Mask-less options for sleep apneaCPAP therapy is considered ideal treatment for many obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) sufferers, especially those diagnosed with moderate to severe OSA. However, CPAP compliance has always been a problem for patients. Many OSA patients have anxiety problems when attempting CPAP therapy; others may find their sleep quality even poorer when they wear it.

Luckily, professional oral appliance therapy (OAT) is also recommended as standard of care for mild to moderate apnea patients, or for those with severe who cannot tolerate CPAP. OAT has been researched for over 3 decades, and there are many scholarly written articles demonstrating the effectiveness of this therapy. But for some patients oral devices may be not fully effective. The possible consideration of additional ‘mask-less’ types of treatment may be of help.

I came across this article recently in the Wall Street Journal Sleep Apnea Alternatives, Minus the CPAP Mask and thought we’d share it with you.

It’s important to note that there is limited research to this point on some of these options, such as the Winx treatment. Nonetheless, I like the idea of looking beyond traditional therapy when a patient is simply not wearing CPAP. Although the article describes several ‘mask-less’ treatments for OSA, it’s important to also note, there are additionally other options not listed here.

Hope you enjoy the article!
