Having Trouble Sleeping?

Having trouble sleeping?

Trouble sleeping happens to everyone at one time or another. It is actually quite common. A night or two every now and then is really no big deal. But if a good night’s sleep eludes you more often than not, it may be time for you to change things up a bit.

Here’s a list to help you change up your sleep routine:

  • Stop eating several hours before bedtime
  • Limit your alcohol intake, or better yet don’t have any at all
  • Start getting ready for bed 30 minutes before your actual bedtime
  • Keep your bedroom dark
  • Do not use electronic appliances, such as computers and phones 30 to 60 minutes before retiring
  • Turn off the television
  • Try relaxing techniques to encourage sleepiness
  • Read a book
  • Enjoy aromatherapy masks and sprays to calm you
  • Soak in a warm bath
  • Sip hot chamomile lavender tea
  • Avoid caffeinated drinks 3 hours before bedtime

If all else fails, call your physician. Your doctor will advise you with the right protocol to get that coveted good night’s sleep.

Dinnertime Choices Could Keep You Awake at Night

Sleep Better: Foods that are keeping you awake at night

Are your dinner time choices keeping you awake at night?

Are your dinnertime choices keeping you awake at night? Making right choices at the dinner table may help you sleep better. What you eat before bedtime could become problematic. We all know how important sleep is to our overall health. Late night snacks or high fatty foods may keep you awake at night and leave you feeling groggy and fatigued the next day.

Steaks and chops are delicious, but they are high in fat, especially when they are laden with gravies and sauces. Ice cream hits the spot, but again, it is so high in fat. What about a glass of wine or a cocktail? Yes, alcohol can be problematic, too. If you happen to suffer with acid reflux at night, stay clear of tomatoes.

These 5 food items eaten at dinner time will rob you of shut eye and could keep you awake at night:

  1. Beef, fatty meats
  2. Ice Cream
  3. Alcoholic beverages
  4. Chocolate
  5. Desserts high in sugar

Smart Sleep Tip – Use a Morning Aligner to Prevent Side Effects From Oral Appliance Therapy

Hi this is Mary Ellen and I am going to review the tip of the week for dental sleep medicine.

This is a morning aligner, or a repositioner, or a retainer. It can be called different names by different providers of oral appliance therapy. Using these devices is one of the most important things I can talk to you about today that involves oral appliance therapy. For those patients who are wearing an oral appliance for snoring and apnea, use a custom  morning repositioner like this in the morning after you take out your appliance to help prevent potential side effects of your bite from changing.  Try to slowly adjust your bite into this device.  After it is inserted, keep it on your teeth anywhere from 5 minutes to 25 minutes or longer depending on what your teeth need. Take it out after five minutes and “test” your bite. If your bite does not feel ‘regular’ or where it needs to be, for normal chewing put it back into your mouth and adjust your bite to fit the pattern of the device again. Hold it there with moderate pressure until your teeth go back to their normal position that you are used to chewing.  After it is removed just briefly brush the morning aligner and place along with your oral appliance into the container box leaving the lid open and you are good to go. Our tip of the day, use a morning aligner to help prevent side effects from the use of oral appliance therapy for snoring and apnea.
