Samples of FDA approved Oral Appliances (OA)

  • SomnoDent Appliance

The SomnoDent features medical grade stainless steel screws on the side of the appliance to provide incremental levels of jaw advancement. This optimizes the effectiveness and comfort-level of treatment, as the jaw is moved only as far as is required to alleviate snoring and OSA.

  • Suad Appliance

The SUAD appliance is similar to the Herbst, but has an internal metal framework which prevents fracture of the acrylic. It is well suited for those that grind often at night or who have other devices that have broken.

  • Klearway Appliance

This Mandibular Repositioning Appliance (MRA) is made of a Thermoplastic material which is placed in hot tap water prior to placement into the mouth. The adjustment mechanism is on the roof of the mouth and can be adjusted in .25mm increments.

  • Herbst Appliance

This type of MRA is made of hard plastic / thermoplastic material. The site of adjustment hardware is located on the cheek side of the molar teeth. This type of OA does allow for some lateral movement. This appliance can be fabricated out of material that has no methylmethacrylate and is thus safe for patients who are allergic to this material.

  • Adjustable PM Positioner

A custom-made appliance constructed of a heat-sensitive acrylic that fits over the upper and lower teeth. Its advancing mechanism is on the cheek side of the device. It allows a small amount of jaw movement (4mm) so that the patient does not feel “locked into position”.

  • Tap Appliance

The TAP appliance has separate sections for the top and bottom Jaw. Each portion can be placed into the mouth independently before connecting the two.

  • Thornton Adjustable Positioner (TAP® 3 appliance)

The TAP®3 fits over the teeth similar to a mouth guard and advances the jaw forward during sleep. The TAP3 is similar to the TAP appliance without the adjustment device extension.

  • E.M.A.™

The E.M.A. is similar to clear acrylic orthodontic retainers. Its ‘hardware’ consists of specially designed, patented elastic bands. This appliance moves the jaw forward in fairly significant steps, which may be difficult to tolerate. Caremust be taken to avoid breaking the lower portion when replacing the custom elastics. The EMA is well tolerated by patients who grind their teeth, and has no metal. It can be used by patients with a nickel metal allergy.

  • Silencer Appliance:

Silencer has a titanium based hinge which is beneficial to patients with particular metal allergies.

  • MPowRx™

This flexible polyvinyl material does not depend on teeth for retention. Rather, the tongue is held forward by the negative pressure created in the vacuum bulb on the front of the appliance.
