Sleep Problems Within the Military

Sleep Problems with the MilitaryWith the recent passing of Veteran’s Day, I came across an article discussing the impact on sleep problems within our community of military personnel and veterans.

Some of the most common sleep issues, such as insomnia is quite common amongst military personnel.  Some of the reasons for an increased frequency as compared to people outside the services include:

  • Being stressed in regards to being deployed and possible exposure to combat.
  • Many have irregular work shift schedules during deployment and in combat.
  • Difficulty with adjustment of life at home after completion of active duty
  • Service-related injuries and illnesses.

If you are in the armed forces or have served in the past, it’s important to realize that sleep problems are more common as compared to others outside the military communities.  Many sleep issues and sleep disorders can be treated successfully.  The best place to start if you are suffering with any sleep disturbance or have a generalized sense of poor sleep quality is to talk with a physician knowledgeable with sleep disorders for a thorough evaluation.
