Smart Sleep Tip – Obstructive Sleep Apnea Can Be Hereditary

If you have been previously diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, a sleeping disorder that often is accompanied with snoring, it is important to know that this condition often runs in families. Although increased weight increases your chance of having obstructive sleep apnea, there’s a lot more involved than this and some people are very thin and have apnea.  There are hereditary attributes such as jaw structures, and other upper anatomy situations that makes one at higher risk for OSA. If you have been previously diagnosed and you are suffering from apnea, or even getting it treated, please talk to your adult kids, parents, or siblings. They are all at high risk for developing sleep apnea as well, and you might want to share that knowledge with them. Thank you and today’s sleep tip is to openly discuss with those close in your family that they are high risk for having obstructive sleep apnea.

Smart Sleep Tip: Finding a Doctor through the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM)

First of all, when our patients come to us, we have to make sure that their snoring is not something more serious like a disorder that is called obstructive sleep apnea. With obstructive sleep apnea, a person stops or pauses breathing up to hundreds of times per hour during sleep which can lead to many other health problems.

Very often, we will refer our patients to their physicians to get evaluated. If you do not have a current physician, or if you are looking for someone specialized in sleep medicine, visit the website of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) to find a physician in your area knowledgeable in sleep disorders.

Our smart sleep tip of the day: if you are interested in finding out if your snoring is more serious such as with .obstructive sleep apnea, talk to your physician or find a physician through the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Smart Sleep Tip #4: What are the Differences Between Internet Anti-Snoring Mouth Retainers and Custom Made Professional Devices?

I’m here to talk to you about a sleep tip regarding oral appliance therapy or some of the information on the over-the-counter devices that are out there for snoring. We’ve been treating snoring and apnea patients for over 15 years, and common complaints about oral appliances that are internet or store bought include:  they fall out, they don’t last long, and they’re hard to adjust.  Overall, many people have lots of problems with these over-the-counter anti-snoring devices.

Oral appliances made by professionals, by dentists trained in dental sleep medicine are made with impressions of your own mouth and customized models. They are more comfortable, easy to adjust, easy to clean, and far more effective than the boil-and-bite devices that are really made for snoring, not for apnea.

If you are snoring or have apnea and are interested in a professional device that can help eliminate your snoring or your apnea, seek help. We are here to help you. www.TiredOfSnoring.com has a lot more information, including a wonderful audio podcast about the Dangers of Over-the-Counter Snoring Devices.

Smart Dental Sleep Tip #3: Can’t Tolerate CPAP? Know Other Options Exist

I work with patients with snoring and apnea problems. Today’s sleep tip involves what to do AFTER your sleep test that evaluated your snoring has been completed. If it is found that you have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a very serious health condition that needs to be treated, there is a very high chance that you will be recommended to use a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) device. This is an air pressure machine that helps keep your airway open at night and prevent apnea. This type of therapy is very effective. Unfortunately, many patients have a very hard time getting used to the CPAP therapy because of the hoses and facial attachments of the device. If this happens to you, it is important to know that you do have other options. Oral appliance therapy is a great alternative to the CPAP therapy. Oral appliance therapy is an area that we work with for our patients. For a lot of information on CPAP alternatives with mouth retainers or devices, we urge you to visit www.tiredofsnoring.com to find out how oral appliance therapy for obstructive sleep apnea can change your life. Thank you.

Smart Sleep Tip 2: What To Do If You or Your Partner Are Snoring Often

Today’s smart sleep tip involves what to do if you or your bed partner is snoring often. Knowing that it might be more serious, it’s important to find out and have the snoring evaluated.  It may be something more serious like obstructive sleep apnea, rather than just mild snoring.

One of the first places to start when evaluating your snoring for potential treatment is talk to a health care professional, somebody trained in sleep medicine. It’s also important to know that he/she might recommend a sleep test to evaluate your snoring. If that happens, I urge you to listen to my very informative audio podcast After Your Sleep Test: The 5 Questions You Must Ask!   It could save your life!
