Women and Sleep Apnea: Not Your Typical Stereotype of a Snorer

The stereotype of a typical snorer: 40 Years Plus, Overweight, Snoring Like a Freight Train, and, of course, Male.  When you think of the typical snorer or sleep apnea sufferer, this is who you think of.

Don’t be fooled: A recent study confirmed that Women do suffer from sleep apnea, too.  In fact, the study found the average age, body mass index and blood pressure between men and women snorers were similar. Women are twice as likely as men to have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

The most common symptom of sleep apnea? Snoring! 95% of men and 90% of women who complain of snoring suffer from sleep apnea.

Other symptoms women reported in high numbers:

  • Morning headaches
  • Depression
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Insomnia
  • Daytime sleepiness

Women who are menopausal or postmenopausal are at a greater risk for sleep apnea.

If you suffer from one or more of the above symptoms, you may be at risk for sleep apnea. Consult your medical doctor for further information and to learn about your treatment options.
